At Ross Local School District, we believe in the power of community, the magic of kindness, and the importance of celebrating every child’s unique journey. On Friday, August 23rd, our Morgan Elementary School staff and students came together in an extraordinary way to make a dream come true for one of our very special students, Cody.
Cody’s Journey
Cody’s story is one of strength, resilience, and optimism. He started preschool at Morgan with a speech delay, but as time went on, his mother noticed that his gross motor skills were also delayed. Concerned, she sought help from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, where Cody was eventually referred to the Neuromuscular Department. In May 2021, Cody was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. Further tests revealed that he had Becker’s Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic condition.
Shortly after his diagnosis, Cody faced another significant challenge when he broke his femur. For nine long weeks, Cody was in a cast from his stomach down to his feet, and he had to relearn how to walk once the cast was removed. Despite these hurdles, Cody remained optimistic. His mother shared, “Cody is very optimistic and knows he has a disability, but he does not let that bring him down. He knows when he needs a break or can’t do something, which will serve him well the rest of his life.”
Now a second grader at Morgan Elementary, Cody continues to inspire everyone around him with his positive attitude and determination. His journey is a testament to his strength and the unwavering support of his family and the Morgan community.
A Magical Surprise
Last year, Cody’s doctor introduced his family to the Kids Wish Network, which grants wishes to children with life-altering conditions. After learning about Cody’s story, the foundation reached out to his parents to learn more about his interests and what he might wish for. Little did they know that Cody would soon be selected for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The Kids Wish Network chose Cody and his family for an unforgettable trip to Disneyland in California, where they will enjoy an immersive Star Wars experience, explore Galaxy’s Edge, meet beloved characters, and create magical memories together. But before they could embark on this adventure, the foundation wanted to make the reveal extra special.
That’s where Morgan Elementary stepped in. When the foundation reached out to Mr. Perry and Ms. Elam, they knew they wanted to do something truly memorable. After talking with Cody’s mom, it was decided that the big reveal would happen at school, surrounded by the teachers and classmates who have been such an important part of Cody’s journey.
A Day of Disney Magic
To set the stage for the big surprise, Morgan Elementary celebrated Disney Spirit Day on August 23rd. The hallways were filled with the magic of Disney as students and staff alike dressed in their favorite Disney attire, from Mickey Mouse ears to princess dresses. The excitement built throughout the day as everyone anticipated the special assembly that would take place at the end of the school day.
When the time finally came, the entire school gathered together in the gymnasium. The air was electric with anticipation as “Minnie and Mickey” made a special appearance, joining Cody’s teachers from preschool through second grade on stage. Then, the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived—Cody’s wish was revealed! The look of joy on Cody’s face as he learned that his dream of going to Disneyland was coming true was a sight to behold.
Celebrating Cody and Our Community
It was a day filled with joy, magic, and celebration—not just for Cody, but for our entire school community. The love and support shown by Morgan’s staff and students exemplified what it means to be part of the Ross family. We are so proud of Cody for his strength and courage, and we are equally proud of our Morgan community for rallying around him and making this day one to remember.
As Cody prepares for his magical adventure, we know that he carries with him the love and support of everyone at Morgan Elementary. We are honored to have Cody as one of our students, and we can’t wait to hear all about his incredible trip to Disneyland.
Cody, you inspire us all—thank you for being a shining light in our school! 🌟
